Active Participation
Island cricket has gone from strength to strength during this academic
year, offering children educated on the Isle of Dogs the opportunity
to learn and develop their cricket skills through active participation.
This year specialized coaching, during curriculum time, has advantaged
children. The lengths of the sessions have been between 45 minutes
to 1 hour, generally running for five weeks.
An extension of these coaching skills has involved the Island Inter-school
Competition in the Summer Term. Not only have the children been able
to utilize their skills in team situations, but also they have had
the opportunity to represent their school in organised tournaments.
Coordinator’s Role
As coordinator of the program, my responsibility has been to place
instructors in schools, liasing with coaches and teachers.
Additionally, I have provided coaching and extended sessions for
many of the schools on the Island, including Insets for teachers
demonstrating knowledge and expertise in cricket skills.
Island Cricket has received positive responses from both pupils
and teachers alike. Its success has been largely to the planning
and implementation of activities by all coaches. This has allowed
pupils to enjoy the activities meanwhile providing a teaching model
to classroom teachers in the skills of cricket.
Future
To further advance this programme I wish to obtain sufficient Sports
funding to develop cricket further on the Isle of Dogs for the 2003/2004
year. This will be achieved by using the various schools and community
groups on the Island.
