The Spring term OoSHL Co-ordinators Forum took place on the 26th and 28th February 2008 at the PDC. Attendance was good. However, two secondary schools were absent, one due to sickness and the other the co-ordinator had other urgent business.

Thank you to those who were able to attend. A special thanks to Mike Burns for sharing Morpeth’s system for managaing OoSHL programme. Mike can be contacted on: 020 8981 0921 e mail: michaelburns10@hotmail.com

Playing for Success

Claire Hatton, Joint Head of Extended Schools attended the Forum to talk about the Playing for Success Centre being established in Tower Hamlets. Playing for Success is a national initiative established by the DCSF (Formerly DfES) in 1997. It aims to contribute to raising educational standards, especially in urban areas, by establishing Study Support Centres in professional sports organisations. Tower Hamlets sports partner is London Marathon. Playing for success is a tried and tested way of engaging underachieving pupils in raising achievements in literacy, numeracy and ICT skills using the medium of sports.

Tower Hamlets London Marathon Playing for Success Centre will be based in the Globe Town Learning Community Centre, on the site of Morpeth School. The centre will be run by a full time manager who will be a qualified and experienced teacher able to deliver the PfS objectives. The centre will initially focus on KS2 and 3 pupils.

Summary of programme

·        The programme will commence from September 2008

·        It will follow the standard suggested by the PFS and will be delivered over 2 x 5 week periods per term, with 4 x 3 hours per week of engagement in the PFS learning, through the medium of London marathon.

·        There will be 15 learners per session, taking part in one session per day, over 4 days per week

·        The programme will be developed and delivered by the centre manager, supported by mentors and volunteers.

You will hear more about the PFS Centre in the summer term and how your schools can participate in the programme. However, if you want to register your interest early or want to find out more you can contact Claire on: 020 7364 6344 or email: Claire.hatton@towerhamlets.gov.uk

17th June 2008

Tower Hamlets Professional Development Centre

English Street, London E3 4TA

Sports and Culture is now firmly on the national educational agenda. The Government wants to ensure that all children no matter where they live or what their background have the chance to engage in five hours of sports and at least five hours of high quality culture a week in and out of school.

Objectives of the Conference

To promote and support both the Cultural and Sports five hours per week entitlement for all children and young people

To embed the role of study support as a key vehicle for supporting the delivery of the offer

To ensure that all Out of School Hours Learning (Study Support) managers are kept informed of this national agenda and feel confident about supporting the delivery of it within their schools

TOWER HAMLETS SUMMER UNIVERSITY 17/10/2008

Dear Colleague

October Half term programme

Tuesday-Thursday, 28th-30th October 2008

Tower Hamlets Summer University have once again teamed up with Tower Hamlets Council Extended School Services to host a borough wide programme of activities taking place during the October Half term: Tuesday-Thursday, 28th-30th October 2008.

The courses are open to young people aged 11-18 years old. The courses are taking place at four secondary schools including Langdon Park, George Green’s, Bishop Challoner and Central Foundation.

The idea for the programme is to create more provision to young people by creating a safe place to learn, achieve and have fun during the holiday period. If you could promote these fantastic opportunities to the young people at your schools, I would be extremely happy.

Places are limited, so it’s first come first served.

If you require further information please contact me Abdul Azim, Business Development Coordinator

at Tower Hamlets Summer University on 020 7183 3216 or e-mail me at

abdul.azim@summeruni.org.

Kind regards

Abdul Azim

NEW PROJECTS 23/12/2008

For all schools in LAP 3/4 and LAP 7/8.

The Children's Society are offering the chance for pupils from your schools to get involved in participation projects in the new year.  The projects use fun, interactive methods to support children and young people to

  • influence decisions about issues that affect them
  • improve their self esteem and self confidence
  • develop teamwork and communication skills and focus on presenting a final artistic product representing their ideas to decision makers

What TCS needs form schools:  a venue to hold sessions, a member of staff to support to co-deliver sessions, (after school) and help to identify a suitable group of children (up to 15), collect completed parental consent forms and take on some organisation within the school, (reminding children on the day for instance!).

What TCS will provide:

  • 2 project workers who will plan and prepare sessions, including all resources and refreshments.  (A further project worker from Tower Hamlets will attend).
  • Certificates and vouchers for all children and young people who attend
  • Meaningful opportunities for children and young people to engage - projects from the first stage have fed their ideas back to Young Mayor, Olympics team and Play team (Tower Hamlets)
  • Supported learning and development opportunity for your staff member
  • A final project report.

Further details are included in the attached document.  To take part please contact Paul Crozier using the contact details below - initially we would like to meet with schools to discuss the projects and put arrangements in place to start projects the week beginning 12th January.  Due to the Christmas holidays nearing we will respond to schools on a fist come, first served basis.
